FAQ
Frequently asked questions about modified engineering plastics
The questions buyers and engineers ask most before placing a first order: minimum order quantity, sampling time, certification and compliance documents, how to choose a material, how to fix moulding defects, packing and export. Answers come from our own production and export process - contact us to confirm details for a specific grade.
Ordering & sampling
What is the minimum order quantity for custom compounds?
500 kg for standard grades and 1 tonne for a newly developed formulation. Small trial lots are supported, typically 5-25 kg for mould trials and property validation.
How long does sampling take, and is it charged?
Existing grades are sampled in 3-7 days; a new formulation takes 7-15 days. The sample material itself is free; international courier cost is paid by the receiver, or we can ship on your collect account.
What is the lead time for mass production after sample approval?
Normally 10-20 days, depending on grade, colour and order size. Urgent orders can be scheduled first. In-house formulation, extrusion and testing are what keep lead times stable.
What payment terms do you accept?
T/T (30% deposit, 70% against copy of bill of lading) and L/C at sight. The first order from a new customer is normally 100% T/T in advance; credit terms can be discussed once a track record exists.
Can your compounds replace imported brands?
Yes. We develop drop-in alternatives benchmarked against the imported grade, validate them through small trial mouldings, then scale up the replacement - usually at a lower material cost while holding the required properties.
Can we sign an NDA?
Yes. Where drawings, part photos or formulation requirements are involved, we are happy to sign a confidentiality agreement before exchanging documents and quotes.
Do you offer toll compounding?
Yes. We can process material supplied by you, including already-certified material. For certified recycled content such as GRS, ownership of the material and the scope of certification must be confirmed with the certification body first.
Certification & compliance
Which management system certifications does CPlastics hold?
ISO 9001 for quality management, ISO 14001 for environmental management and IATF 16949:2016 for the automotive sector.
Can you provide RoHS and REACH statements?
Yes. RoHS and REACH material compliance statements can be issued on request.
Do you have a UL yellow card? Which flame retardant grades can you reach?
Flame retardant grades can be sent for third-party testing such as UL94 on request, and the yellow card is issued by the testing body itself. Commonly specified levels are UL94 V-0, V-2 and HB - the level actually achieved depends on grade, wall thickness and colour, and must be confirmed by testing.
Are your flame retardant systems halogenated? How do I choose?
We offer both. For exports to the EU, or where smoke density and corrosion matter, halogen-free systems are recommended (for example halogen-free flame retardant PC/ABS FR-1211). Where cost is the priority and no halogen-free rule applies, a halogenated system gives better value.
Can you provide PPAP and IMDS data for automotive grades?
Yes. PPAP documentation can be provided under our IATF 16949 system, and IMDS data can be entered in cooperation with the customer.
Is a test report supplied with every batch?
Yes. Every grade has a TDS, and every shipment is accompanied by a COA. In-house testing covers melt index, ash content, density, tensile, flexural, impact, heat deflection temperature and Vicat softening point.
Do you hold GRS recycled certification?
No. CPlastics does not currently hold GRS certification and cannot issue a GRS certificate number. If you need recycled content, we can process your own already-certified recycled material under toll compounding - material ownership and the scope of certification must be confirmed with the certification body.
Material selection
How do I choose between PP and PA6 (nylon)?
PP has low density, low cost, good chemical resistance and almost no moisture uptake - it suits automotive interior parts, appliance housings and household goods. PA6 is stronger, stiffer, more heat resistant and more wear resistant, but it absorbs moisture and must be dried before moulding; it suits structural parts, gears, power tool housings and loaded snap-fits.
Should I choose 15%, 30% or 40% glass fibre?
More glass fibre means higher stiffness, strength and heat deflection temperature, but lower impact toughness, a greater risk of fibre show on the surface and more wear on screw and mould. GF15 balances surface finish and toughness, GF30 is the usual choice for structural parts, and GF40 is used where high stiffness and dimensional stability are required.
Which is more suitable, PC/ABS alloy or ABS?
ABS is cheaper, flows well and is easy to process, suiting general appearance parts and housings. PC/ABS alloy offers better impact strength, heat resistance and low-temperature performance, suiting thin walls, cold environments, parts with drop-test requirements, and parts to be plated or painted - at a higher unit price than ABS.
How much does flame retardant PC/ABS cost compared with flame retardant ABS?
PC/ABS base resin costs more than ABS, so flame retardant PC/ABS is more expensive at the same flame retardancy level. It can however reduce total cost by allowing thinner walls and cutting the risk of brittle failure at low temperature or in drop tests - evaluate it on the finished part, not on price per kilo alone.
When is PPS really necessary?
PPS is worth considering only when continuous heat resistance above 200 degC, tight dimensional accuracy, chemical resistance, or replacement of metal or thermoset parts is required. For ordinary service conditions, PA6-GF30 or PC/ABS is usually more economical.
How do I choose between reinforced PA6 and PA66?
PA66 has a higher melting point and heat deflection temperature, slightly higher stiffness and slightly lower water absorption. PA6 offers better toughness, a wider processing window and lower cost. CPlastics produces reinforced PA6 as its standard range; PA66 options can be evaluated on request.
Processing & troubleshooting
How do I deal with fibre show on glass fibre reinforced parts?
Fibre show comes from glass fibre appearing at the surface. Raise mould and melt temperature, increase injection speed moderately, raise back pressure to disperse the fibre better, and optimise gate position. For cosmetic parts, consider a lower fibre loading or a surface-modified grade.
How can warpage be corrected?
Warpage is mainly caused by uneven fibre orientation and differential shrinkage. Adjust gate position and number, raise holding pressure and holding time, extend cooling time, reduce the temperature difference between mould halves, and if needed move to a mineral-filled or low-warpage grade.
What causes splay or silver streaks?
In most cases the material was not dried sufficiently and moisture vaporises in the barrel, or the barrel temperature is too high and the material degrades. Hygroscopic materials such as PA6 and PC must be dried as specified before moulding.
How do I solve black specks and burnt material?
They usually come from residues in barrel dead spots, excessive melt temperature, or degradation during long idle periods at heat. Clean barrel and screw regularly, lower melt temperature, shorten idle time at temperature, and purge with a dedicated cleaning compound when changing materials.
Must PA6 and PC be dried before moulding, and for how long?
Yes. PA6 is typically dried at 80-90 degC for 4-6 hours and PC at 120 degC for 3-4 hours; always follow the drying conditions on the grade TDS, and extend the time when the regrind ratio is high.
What is the shrinkage, and how much should I allow in the mould?
Shrinkage varies with base resin and filling system: unfilled PP is typically 1.0-1.5%, while glass fibre reinforced grades can drop to 0.2-0.6%. Use the measured shrinkage given on the grade TDS for tool design, and validate with trial mouldings before series production.
