Does an Electrical Panel Need Flame-Retardant PC/ABS? Three Deciding Questions

Once flame rating, wall thickness and appearance are fixed, usually only one or two candidates remain.

Application Cases2026-07-02

Question one: does it touch live parts

If a safety distance separates the panel from live parts — per IEC or GB creepage and clearance rules — and the panel carries no insulating function, standard PC/ABS or ABS is sufficient.

If the panel is the housing or support of live parts it must pass the relevant flame and glow-wire tests, typically UL94 V-0 with glow-wire ignition temperature above 750 °C.

Question two: can the wall carry the rating

V-0 is tied to thickness. A grade rated V-0 at 3.0 mm does not automatically pass at 1.0 mm. Panels commonly run 1.2-2.0 mm, so confirm the rating at target thickness.

If the wall is too thin to reach V-0, fix it structurally — add shielding or move circuits — rather than simply loading more flame retardant, which degrades properties and inflates cost.

Question three: appearance and post-processing

Gloss panels need good flow to avoid flow marks; panels requiring pad printing or laser marking should use correspondingly modified grades.

Blooming is also common: some flame retardants migrate to the surface under heat and humidity, leaving a white haze that spoils appearance and later bonding.
