What Appliance Makers Care About: Flame Retardance, Weathering and Batch Colour

Appliances rarely fail on strength — the friction is flame certification, long-term weathering and colour consistency.

Flame retardance is a hard gate

Housings and areas near live parts generally require UL94 V-0 or V-2. Washing machines, air conditioners and televisions each follow different standards, and thickness and colour tiers are set by the OEM specification.

Europe-bound models additionally require halogen-free; both must be stated at enquiry, since choosing the wrong system means re-certifying the whole programme.

Weathering is underestimated

Outdoor unit housings and washing machine panels sit for years in sun and humidity. Standard PC/ABS yellows and PP chalks, so weathering grades with UV stabilisers are needed.

Accept on two metrics: ΔE and retained impact after 1000 hours of xenon ageing, not colour alone.

Colour is where disputes arise

Parts within a batch must match the sealed sample, yet lot-to-lot variation is sometimes visible to the eye. State in the technical agreement: the ΔE ceiling, illuminant used (commonly D65) and the sealed reference.

For high-gloss white parts, fibre show and flow marks matter too — they belong in the acceptance criteria.
