Oil Prices Plunge Sharply, Plastic Markets Show Mixed Volatility

On August 6, 2026, international crude oil markets suffered a sharp sell-off, with WTI crude futures settling at $75.77/barrel, down 5.69% in a single session, and Brent crude futures at $79.36/barrel, down 5.26%. The crude oil crash has directly impacted the cost structure of the plastics supply chain, pushing plastic markets into a narrow-range volatility pattern.

1. Crude Oil Collapse Weighs on Costs; Plastics Follow Down

Both WTI and Brent fell below key technical support levels this period. From a fundamentals perspective, concerns over global economic growth intensified, compounded by unexpectedly higher inventory builds in major consuming nations, prompting speculative capital to exit commodities. As the most upstream segment of the chemical chain, the cost-side collapse rapidly transmitted downstream.

For polyethylene (PE), domestic LLDPE film-grade prices ranged 7,500-7,800 CNY/ton on August 5, with LDPE at 9,800-10,100 CNY/ton. Transactions remained demand-driven, with traders adopting a wait-and-see approach. The China Plastics Price Index stood at 883.88 points, up a marginal 0.14%, reflecting overall consolidation.

For polypropylene (PP), mainstream PP granular prices held at 8,200-8,500 CNY/ton. The PP price index registered 9,159 points, up 0.49% from the prior day, marking the strongest performer. Analysts attribute this to persistently low operating rates across the PP sector and tight spot supply providing price support at the bottom, though weak demand capped gains.

The PVC market showed a divided trend, with East China calcium carbide-based Type-5 quoted at 6,700-6,800 CNY/ton. Downstream terminals maintained rigid purchasing, showing little willingness to build inventory.

2. U.S. Resin Prices Diverged in July

According to Plastics News, U.S. resin prices showed a mixed pattern in July: polystyrene (PS) and PVC prices declined, while polypropylene (PP) edged higher. Analysts attributed PS and PVC weakness to easing feedstock cost pressures, while PP was supported by tight supply. The market expects PS prices may recover in August.

3. Recycled Plastics Monthly Report: All Segments Down

JLC data showed China's recycled plastics market followed a "first-fall-then-rise-then-stabilize" pattern in July 2026, with monthly average prices declining across the board. Mid-month geopolitical tensions briefly drove oil and virgin resin prices higher, lifting recycled resin, but insufficient demand follow-through capped the upside.

4. Market Outlook

Overall, current plastic market supply-demand fundamentals show limited change, with short-term outlook favoring narrow-range volatility. Key watchpoints: whether crude oil stabilizes, progress of maintenance restart schedules, and downstream agricultural film restocking pace. Operators are advised to maintain light positions and rigid-demand purchasing only.
