What Is PP-TD20? Mineral-Filled Polypropylene Explained

TD stands for talc and 20 for 20% loading. Mineral filling brings polypropylene stiffness, heat resistance and dimensional stability.

Read the naming first

PP-TD20 breaks down as follows: PP for polypropylene base resin, TD from the customary abbreviation of talc, and 20 for roughly 20% talc loading. Siblings include PP-TD10, TD30 and TD40, plus PP-GF20 for glass and PP-EPDM for impact modification.

This is not an international naming standard, so suppliers vary slightly; the data sheet is more reliable than the grade name.

What talc brings

Stiffness: flexural modulus rises from about 1,500 MPa for homopolymer PP to 2,200-2,800 MPa.

Heat: heat deflection temperature at 0.45 MPa climbs from roughly 95 °C to 115-125 °C, keeping parts from softening under load.

Dimensional stability: moulding shrinkage falls from 1.5-2.0% to 0.9-1.2% and becomes more uniform across directions, reducing warpage.

The costs: density rises to around 1.05-1.12 g/cm³, impact strength drops, and welding and painting become harder.

Where it is used, and substitutes

Automotive door panels and shrouds, air-conditioner components, washing machine counterweights and small appliance frames are the main applications.

Where better low-temperature impact is also needed the usual step up is PP+EPDM-T20; above 130 °C, look at PP-GF or PA.
