Paint-Free Versus On-Line Painted Bumpers: Two Different Material Routes

Dropping the paint line cuts piece cost sharply, but raises the bar on surface quality and weathering.

Cost structure of both routes

On-line painting adds paint line investment, VOC treatment, rework and energy; going paint-free removes all of it and cuts piece cost clearly.

Paint-free does not mean lower requirements, though: appearance defects are no longer hidden by the film, so weld line strength, grain replication and scratch resistance all need to step up.

Key points for paint-free compounds

First, raw material purity and dispersion: any gel or contaminant shows immediately. Second, a more complete weathering package, since no film shields against UV. Third, uniform masterbatch dispersion to avoid colour shift and flow marks.

Batch colour control is another crux for exterior parts: agree a ΔE ceiling and accept against a sealed limit sample.

How to choose

For entry-level models and commercial vehicle bumpers and lower shrouds, paint-free usually wins. For high-gloss trim on premium variants and parts needing metallic or pearlescent effects, on-line painting remains necessary.

Decide the route before styling freeze, because it drives material, tool steel and grain design.
