EU Imposes Tariffs on Chinese Polyester, Biodegradable Plastics Sector Rises Against the Trend

In early June 2026, China-EU trade friction escalated significantly, with the EU launching multiple trade remedy investigations against China in quick succession. The textile and apparel industry has become the "eye of the storm." Among them, polyester product tariffs have exceeded 90%, causing a major impact on domestic PET and downstream plastic packaging exports.

Analysts point out that the EU tariff range covers core categories such as polyester chips and polyester staple fiber, which will directly increase the cost of Chinese plastic products exported to Europe. Affected by this, some domestic PET bottle chip and film manufacturers have begun adjusting export strategies, shifting to alternative markets in Southeast Asia and the Middle East.

While traditional plastic exports face pressure, the biodegradable plastics concept sector has risen against the trend. Data shows that 84 biodegradable plastics concept stocks rose 1.63% overall, with Haichuan Zhineng up 15.93%, Shaoneng Gufen up 10.05%, and Guanhao Gaoxin up 6.85%. Leading company Jindan Technology, primarily engaged in lactic acid and lactate products, reported Q4 2025 revenue of 992 million yuan, accounting for 61.48%.

At the industry level, the continued advancement of the "plastic ban" combined with rising consumer environmental awareness has driven growing demand for biodegradable plastic bags. Industry insiders warn that the sector is currently mixed, with "pseudo-degradable" products flooding the market. Purchasers should focus on verifying authoritative degradation certifications such as EU EN13432 and US ASTM D6400.

Market Outlook: EU tariff barriers will force domestic plastic companies to accelerate transformation and upgrading in the short term. The biodegradable and bio-based materials track is expected to receive more policy and capital attention. It is recommended to watch investment opportunities in leading biodegradable plastics companies with international certification qualifications, while being alert to profit compression risks for traditional polyester export companies.
