Saudi PPE Resin Plants Halted, Global Supply Chain at Risk
In late March this year, PPE (polyphenylene ether) resin factories in Saudi Arabia's Jubail Industrial City halted production due to the Strait of Hormuz shipping disruption. The Jubail complex previously supplied approximately 70% of global PPE resin. PPE resin is a critical material for PCB (printed circuit board) manufacturing, and the supply interruption has profound implications for the electronics supply chain.
PCB Prices Surge 40%
A recent Goldman Sachs report shows PCB prices surged up to 40% in April compared to March. US PCB manufacturer TTM Technologies' stock has risen over 400% in the past year. The impact of PPE resin disruption is accelerating from upstream raw materials to downstream electronic products.
Shengquan Clarifies, But Stock Still Hits Two Consecutive Limit-Ups
On the evening of June 10, Shengquan Group (605589) issued an urgent clarification stating that the high-molecular-weight PPE reported in the media belongs to the engineering plastics category and differs significantly from the company's electronic-grade PPO resin used in copper clad laminates (CCL) in product system, technical route, and application market.
Despite the clarification, market enthusiasm remained undiminished. After hitting the daily limit on June 9, Shengquan's stock surged again on June 10, recording two consecutive limit-ups, closing at 60.1 yuan/share with a market cap exceeding 50 billion yuan. The stock has risen 103.87% since April 3.
Engineering Plastics Supply Chain Under Pressure
The Middle East geopolitical conflict continues to deepen its impact on chemical supply chains. Saudi SABIC was previously the world's largest PPE resin supplier, and the Jubail shutdown reduced global supply by 70%. Alternative sources cannot fill the gap in the short term. PPE/PPO alloy materials cover automotive, electronics, and medical device applications.
Difference Between PPE and PPO
PPE (polyphenylene ether) refers to high-molecular-weight polyphenylene ether, an engineering plastic used directly in injection molding. PPO was originally a GE trademark and now typically refers to modified PPE (PPE+HIPS or PPE+PA alloy) with better flowability. Shengquan's electronic-grade PPO focuses on low dielectric constant and low loss characteristics for CCL applications.
Market Outlook
Short term, the Middle East situation shows no signs of easing, and the timeline for restoring Strait of Hormuz shipping remains unclear. PPE resin supply shortages may persist. Monitor: 1) domestic and international PPE/PPO alternative capacity development; 2) PCB industry cost pass-through ability; 3) Middle East ceasefire negotiations. Engineering plastics sector may see structural opportunities amid supply disruptions.
