PC V-0: Certification Cost Versus Real-World Performance Differences

Two flame-retardant PC grades both labelled V-0 can differ twofold in cost and far more in processing window and appearance. Three questions prevent rework.

Industry News2026-06-23

Question one: halogenated or halogen-free

For the same V-0 rating, brominated and halogen-free phosphate systems differ by roughly 30-60% in cost. Phosphate systems also tend to flow better yet absorb moisture more readily and hydrolyse more easily.

Electrical goods shipped to the EU must be halogen-free under RoHS and REACH; other markets can use brominated systems to control cost.

Question two: certified thickness and colour tiers

The thickness tier listed as V-0 on the yellow card determines whether you pass. V-0 at 0.8 mm and V-0 at 1.6 mm are not the same product level, and certification cost accumulates per thickness and colour.

If the thinnest section of your part is 1.0 mm, do not accept a 3.0 mm yellow card as proof.

Question three: transparency required or not

Transparent flame-retardant PC is a different level of difficulty. Conventional flame retardants destroy clarity; dedicated silicone or sulphonate systems are needed, pushing cost up significantly while usually delivering lower impact than opaque grades.

State transmission and haze requirements up front (per ASTM D1003) so the supplier can propose the correct grade.
